So today started out productive (ish) and worked a bit more (ish) and then I had to go out to help P with his computers - and to be with him because I can't seem to get enough. When I got home, I didn't get back into the work so I suppose I'll be working (ish) for some of tomorrow. Ah well.
The news article of the day that I liked was that research from Wyoming has shown a positive relationship between the reintroduction of wolves 15 years ago and the resurgence of young trees such as willows, cottonwoods, and aspens in the area. They have positively affected the ecosystem by decreasing the incidence of overbrowsing by ungulates (primarily elk) that had prevented the growth of these trees to maturity. Aspen trees, in particular, seem to be benefitting from this reduction in their own predation. They had been on a steady decline over the prior 50 years but after the wolf reintroduction, and especially in the last 10 years, they have flourished.
And on a silly note, and because I've been thinking in videos, here is a bit of the silliness that made me laugh tonight.
Oh D.J. Flula, how you make me happy.
And before you ask, no I did not make any New Year's resolutions. I plan to take each day as it comes. I also plan to focus on the things that please me.
In a conversation with a friend on the phone I actually quoted Jane Austen (and it was relevant!). I said "People will always live forever when there is an annuity to be had." It is from Sense and Sensibility in one of my favorite scenes in which the nagging wife convinces her husband, through a series of arguments, to decrease the amount he plans to support his mother and 3 half-sisters from 1500 pounds to nothing. tee hee
